How a quiz session works

Each quiz session takes 3–10 minutes depending on the question count and time limit you set.

1

Choose a topic and grade

Select which Law or topic you want to focus on, or choose "All Laws" for a mixed session. Your grade (L9–L4) is set in your profile and controls the difficulty of questions you see.

2

Set your time limit (optional)

For exam simulation, add a per-question time limit: 10, 20, or 30 seconds. A countdown timer appears as you answer. Skip the timer for a relaxed study session.

3

Answer the questions

Each question has four options. Select your answer — correct answers are shown in green immediately, with a brief explanation if you get it wrong. Questions you've answered correctly before are deprioritised so you always see new ones first.

Review your results and earn badges

At the end of each session your score is saved to your history. Any badges you've unlocked appear immediately. Your overall performance per Law is tracked over time so you can see where to focus next.

How difficulty scales by grade

A grassroots Level 9 referee and a semi-professional Level 4 official need to know different things — and the quiz reflects that.

GrassrootsLevel 9 / L8
  • Clear application of basic Laws
  • Common match situations
  • Restart decisions
  • Misconduct categories
IntermediateLevel 7 / L6
  • Offside interpretations
  • Complex restart scenarios
  • Equipment and substitution rules
  • Multi-official situations
AdvancedLevel 5
  • IFAB clarifications and updates
  • Edge case offside scenarios
  • Penalty kick procedures in detail
  • Abandoned match procedures
Semi-professionalLevel 4+
  • VAR protocol and decision-making
  • Recent IFAB law changes
  • Interpretation and application edge cases
  • Exam-style multi-factor scenarios

Getting the most out of LOTG practice

Study in the week before an assessment

Even two or three 10-question sessions the week before a grading observation significantly improves recall under pressure.

Focus on your weak Laws first

Your results history shows your score per Law over time. Spend extra sessions on the Laws where your average is below 70%.

Use the timer for exam prep

FA online assessments and written exams are time-limited. Practising with the timer builds the mental habit of deciding quickly.

Mix topics, don't only drill one Law

Real matches require switching between Laws in seconds. Occasional mixed-topic sessions sharpen that flexibility.

Frequently asked questions

What is the LOTG module?

LOTG stands for Laws of the Game. The module gives you targeted quiz sessions based on your referee grade (L9 to L4). Each quiz picks questions from a bank of 140+ IFAB and FA-aligned questions, covering all 17 Laws and specialist topics like offside, VAR procedure, and disciplinary action.

How are questions chosen for each quiz?

Questions are filtered by your level and chosen topic. penalty.app tracks which questions you've already seen and always prioritises unseen ones — so you'll cycle through the full question bank before repeating any question. This prevents the false confidence that comes from seeing the same questions repeatedly.

What LOTG badges can I earn?

There are 20 badges across five categories: milestone badges (number of quizzes completed), score badges (getting 10/10 or multiple perfect scores), topic mastery badges (acing a specific Law), streak badges for consecutive sessions, and speed badges for finishing timed quizzes quickly. Badges are awarded automatically.

Can I set a time limit per question?

Yes. Before each quiz you can choose a time limit per question (10, 20, or 30 seconds). This simulates the pressure of an FA written exam or online assessment and is excellent preparation for grading exams.

Which FA grades are supported?

The quiz difficulty scales from Level 9 (grassroots, basic application of the Laws) through to Level 4 and above (edge cases, IFAB interpretations, VAR procedure, and recent clarifications). Set your current grade in Settings and the question bank adjusts automatically.

Are the questions aligned with FA exam standards?

Yes. Questions follow IFAB and FA examination standards and are reviewed for accuracy against the current Laws. Specialist topics like the handball law changes and VAR protocol are included for higher grades.
